NFT Rarity Explained
How rarity is defined, calculated, and why it matters for collections.
In NFT collections, rarity means how uncommon an item is compared to others in the set. It is usually derived from traits: if only 1% of the collection has Gold Background, that trait is rare. Rarity tools use this to rank NFTs.
How Rarity Is Calculated
Each NFT metadata lists traits (e.g. Background: Blue, Eyes: Laser). For the whole collection, you count how many have each trait value. A trait that appears in 10 out of 10,000 items is rarer than one in 3,000. Rarity scores combine these: one common method is to sum 1 / (trait frequency) for each trait. Different sites use slightly different formulas.
Why Creators Set Rarity
When you create a collection, you decide how many of each trait exist. Making some traits scarce creates chase items. Buyers often pay more for the rarest combinations. So rarity drives floor price and demand.
Rarity and 1/1s
For a single 1/1 NFT, rarity in the collection sense does not apply. The value is in the piece itself. Rarity rankings matter for multi-item collections with shared traits.
